"Cross" Causes

"...to truly be pro-life 'means far more than opposing abortion. It also means doing everything in our power to keep people alive, so they might respond to the grace of Jesus Christ.'" | Rick Warren (attributed citation)

There are causes of the cross which every believer needs to be engaged in. The first and foremost is evangelism. As in the oft quoted statement from St Francis of Assisi, "Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words." Having been raised in a traditional (and balanced) pentecostal denomination, I now understand that Pentecost was about God's people being empowered to carry on the ministry of Jesus, taking the power and presence of Jesus into their everyday lives into every situation. In some cases the church (that's me) defaults to being satisfied with a life filled with opinions and preferences, and little of God's power in operation through our lives. We (myself and many in my relational circle, if we are honest with ourselves) align ourselves with slogans and political stances, without really considering the actual calling that God has invited us to join him in - that seeing lives redeemed from sin and death.

The church seems to be going through a catharsis through which the trappings of our political preferences and cultural biases are being exposed for what they are - a shield from having to engage in the lives of those around us and carrying Christ's burden for the world. Once again, God has used Dr. Warren in my life to remind me what it is to take up the cause of the cross. There have a "pro-life" agenda that I I am called to embrace - "that whoever believes in Him would not die, but have eternal life" (John 3:16).
